Ladies let’s avoid the metabolic slow down shall we? 🐌🐌🐌
This dreaded slow down many report in their late 30’s is totally avoidable I promise. But in order to avoid it we have to understand how muscle plays a huge role in our metabolism and how "fast or slow" it is.
As muscle mass decreases, metabolism slows down. Muscle tissue is metabolically active, meaning it burns more calories at REST compared to fat tissue. Muscle also plays a huge role in how our body stores carbs for fuel, basically the more muscle you have to more “storage” you have for carbs to be properly burned as energy for our life and workouts. (More carbs without feeling bloated and heavy? Yes please)
Age related muscle loss will start kicking in around age 35, and it will only get worse every year that we age.
Many women also unknowingly accelerate the muscle loss process by eating very little calories and hammering cardio.
Lots of activity and stress plus low calories will cause the body to become more efficient on lower calories 👉🏻 and it does so by dumping muscle.
How do we fight back? We fight back with strength training and a high protein diet.
Strength training regularly and consistently will help to combat muscle loss. Structured strength training, (as in you are following a program) will even help you BUILD muscle as you age!
Yes you CAN build muscle as you age, but you need to follow a program that is designed to do so and we gotta get our overall calories and protein targets UPPPP!! Without the fuel to support your muscle building goals you will be left spinning your wheels wondering why isn't this working for me!?!?
