Think endless cardio is the secret to fat loss? Let’s set the record straight.
Here’s the truth: strength training is the real key to long-term fat loss. (No cardio is NOT bad) and I am not saying that you should never do cardio, let’s break it down…
Muscle is your metabolism’s best friend. The more lean muscle you have, the more calories your body burns, even at rest. It’s like upgrading your body to burn fuel more efficiently, 24/7. While a hundred or so extra calories may seem insignificant, trust me when you are LOSING muscle instead of adding it, that adds up quick. Think about how easy it is to eat 100 calories!!
Muscle improves insulin sensitivity and glucose disposal. This to me makes the biggest impact!! When you strength train, your muscles become more efficient at absorbing glucose, which helps regulate blood sugar and reduce insulin resistance. This not only supports fat loss but also keeps your energy levels steady throughout the day. Simply put your body is better at taking in carbs and storing them as fuel, not fat!
Cardio burns calories in the moment, but strength training changes the game by increasing your resting metabolic rate. Translation? You burn more calories all day long recovering from your lift and simply by having muscle, not just during your workout like cardio. Worth mentoning here that the longer you do the same cadio method the BETTER your body gets at it, meaning you burn less calories over time as the body adapts! With strength training that is properly progressed you continue to challenge your body over time.
Muscle protects your shape and your health. Ever heard of ‘skinny fat’? That’s what happens when you lose weight through cardio and calorie cutting without maintaining muscle. You might weigh less, but you’ll lack definition and strength becasue you also lost muscle! After 40 skinny and frail should not be the goal! If we want to be resilient to the aging process, injuries, sickness, and disease...We need muscle.
I have worked with so many women who used to rely on endless cardio and crash diets, only to end up frustrated by the lack of results. When they started lifting weights, their body finally transformed. This is why strength training is the foundation of my Fat Loss 101 program. It’s not about starving yourself or spending hours on the treadmill…
Chasing a lower scale number at the risk of losing muscle is not worth it after age 35. By working for fat loss and not just weight loss you can improve your body shape, health, AND strength! (I might add it will do wonders for your confidence and mindset too!)
That is why I created Fat loss 101, to bring you the methods I have been helping my 1:1 clients apply for the last 6 years.
