Women should lift

Friday blog: Women should be resistance training.

There are numerous benefits to lifting weights at least three times per week—benefits that extend far beyond just improving strength or shaping your body. Let’s take a look at why weightlifting is such a smart move for women.

Strength Training Builds Bone Density

One of the key benefits of weightlifting for women is improved bone density. According to Mayo Clinic, “weight-bearing exercise forces your muscles and bones to work against gravity while you’re in an upright position. Weight-bearing exercises stimulate bone formation and may prevent bone loss associated with aging. And the more bone you have when you’re younger, the more likely you are to maintain strong bones as you age.” This means that lifting weights can help women keep their bones healthy as they age, which can help reduce their risk for osteoporosis and other age-related medical issues.

Weightlifting Helps Reduce Fat Mass and Increase Lean Mass

Weightlifting is also beneficial because it encourages the body to reduce fat mass while increasing lean muscle mass, which can lead to improved overall health and a lower risk of developing chronic diseases such as heart disease or diabetes. Additionally, having more muscle does not mean becoming bulky; it’s simply about achieving a healthier balance between fat mass and lean mass for better overall health and wellbeing. If you have ever said you want to be toned, then you are looking to drop fat and add muscle!

Having more lean mass on your body will lead to increased resting metabolism. In a society where highly palatable processed food is at the ready and the center of every social event, having a more flexible metabolism is essential! Lifting weights can help you create a metabolism that works for you, not against you.

Better Hormone Profile

Lifting weights also helps improve hormone balance in women by boosting production of testosterone—a hormone that plays an important role in both physical performance and recovery from exercise. Additionally, weight training has been shown to increase levels of serotonin (the “feel good” hormone) in both men and women which can help decrease anxiety levels, reduce stress hormones like cortisol, improve moods, boost self-confidence levels, and even aid in better sleep quality all of which contribute to better overall health outcomes.

Ultimately, it is important for women to find a program that works best for them and their individual goals when it comes to weight training—whether they want to focus on strength, toning up certain areas of their bodies, preventing injury, or simply health! Resistance training is the best bang for your buck form of exercise and should be the foundation of your routine.
